Using the DARL viewer

Available images

Two different kinds of images are available in the DARL's viewer: (1) Images of all pages of the "Rostocker Liederbuch" (Rostock, University Library: Mss. philol. 100/2) in different representations and (2) images of manuscripts and prints that include parallels to the texts and melodies of the "Rostocker Liederbuch".

(1) Images of the "Rostocker Liederbuch" are available in three representations that show the manuscript in different conditions. Under "Freiburg", there are pictures of the songbook in black and white that were made for the Volksliedarchiv Freiburg by John Meier before 1927 (Freiburg, Volksliedarchiv: M 59; http://freimore.uni-freiburg.de/receive/DocPortal_document_00010730). These images reflect the manuscript's condition before the restoration but do not give any information about the color. "Jügelt" represents the colored facsimile from 1989 whose overall quality is deficient (Jügelt, Karl-Heinz (Hrsg.): Rostocker Liederbuch. Faksimile der Handschrift Mss. Phil. 100/2 der Universitätsbibliothek Rostock. Mit einem Nachwort versehen von Karl-Heinz Jügelt. Rostock 1989). Under "RosDok" finally, there are images in high-resolution that were produced by the University Library of Rostock and that show the manuscript in an advanced condition of deterioration (http://purl.uni-rostock.de/rosdok/ppn642333459). About the condition of the manuscript cf.: http://www.rostocker-liederbuch.de/darl/index.php?id=21 and Holznagel, Franz-Josef / Bostelmann, Annika / Finger, Andreas: Alte Lieder – Neue Medien. 5) pp. 151–168.

(2) About half of the songs in the "Rostocker Liederbuch" can not only be found in the manuscript "Mss. philol 100/2" but also – often in varying versions – in other manuscripts and prints of that time. Thereby, it is usually not possible to describe certain ways of transmission but a look into the variety of parallels still shows fascinating insight into multifaceted networks in which the songs and their melodies circulated in the Late Middle Ages and in early modern times. That is why the DARL collects excerpts from various other manuscripts and prints that include parallels to the "Rostocker Liederbuch".

Rights of use

The images of the manuscripts and prints provided in the DARL-Viewer were made by the particular libraries and archives and are only for the use in private and scientific contexts. The DARL team (www.rostocker-liederbuch.de) acquired the rights of use for the images in order to preserve them in the database-structures of the University Library of Rostock and to present them on the DARL website. Any use of the images in other contexts such as publication or presentation on the internet requires approaching the original holders of rights (libraries and archives). For the citation of the images please use the persistent identifier (not yet available).

User instructions

The viewer presents three different kinds of images of the "Rostocker Liederbuch" that show the manuscript in different conditions ("Freiburg" / "Jügelt" / "RosDok" – cf. the chapter above). The images of the manuscript can be accessed through the page numbers ("Blatt") and the numbers of the texts and the incipits ("Incipit"). The images of the "Rostocker Liederbuch" are complemented with excerpts from the manuscripts and prints that include parallels ("Parallelüberlieferung").
Each image provides the following information at the bottom: Name of the library in possession of the manuscript or print / shelf mark / (page) number. Additionally, the images of the "Rostocker Liederbuch" indicate the texts that are referenced on the specific page.
At the bottom of the images you can find a hyperlink that redirects to the database of the University Library Rostock where you will find a persistent identifier for referencing the digitized objects and a reference to the viewer of the German Research Foundation (not yet available).
In the selection menu you can choose between displaying only one image at a time (use the checkbox) and combining several images (plus / minus). The chosen images can be moved openly on the screen (enable full screen mode in the upper right corner). In using the button "Wiederherstellen", the original order of the images can be restored. In general, each image contains its own buttons that can enlarge (+), scale down (-) and close (x) it or can generate a full screen mode.
